Nick Van Dyke Chimney Sweeps are a family run business conveniently based between Guildford, Woking and Dorking in Surrey so in easy reach of all the beautiful surrounding Surrey countryside as well as including Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire and south London.
Being family led we understand that working hours are not always Monday to Friday 9-5 and tailor our service to suit our clients the best we can. We happily work outside of traditional work hours to help all our clients and fit in around often hectic modern lives. We work seven days a week, 24 hours a day to help find a resolution and even have an urgent response capability to those unexpected incidents that occasionally occur.
Nick’s sweeping education comes from working with and learning from a multi-generation family of Chimney Sweeps in London where he has learnt from the best- and long-established traders. It does not mean that his approach is locked in the past as although we do love the traditional methods where we believe there is more ‘feel’ to the sweep, we are also skilled with the latest power sweeping methods and always use the most appropriate equipment for the job. Continuous professional development and learning is key to adapting to new legislation and techniques but we still retain that core of customer service at the heart of all we do.
Regardless of which log burner, multi fuel stove, open fire or gas fire you have, your chimney will be swept clean from bottom to top using the most suitable method with care and consideration to ensure its working at its most efficient and safest for you and your family
Nick Van Dyke Sweeps are a premium service where care and attention is in everything we do. We provide a time and date and make a point of being there on time. We communicate with our clients every step of the way and are happy to discuss any concerns or questions that you may have. There is no rush or short cut to getting things right and carried out properly.
Polite, punctual and professional has become a mantra that we sweep by.
Every sweep is different with a multitude of variables to consider before we put a brush up the chimney. We ensure that respectful care is given to your home and clean to the highest possible standards so you can see it is not just the taking away of the soot, ash or debris left in the fireplace. It is how we care for and cover up your fireplace and furniture to reduce the possibility of dust encroaching into the room using the latest high powered filtered vacuum cleaner to suck that dust up before it has chance to escape. The efforts we go to protect the working environment to ensure that there is no transfer from fireplace to floor. It is also the careful, methodical process in cleaning, sweeping, testing, checking and ensuring compliance that we take seriously and would like to be seen in a professional sweep in our own homes.
Not only will we sweep your chimney or flue clean we will ensure your appliance is working properly, check all the ropes, seals and cement to ensure that smoke or carbon monoxide is not seeping out of any cracks or badly fitted joints.
Every fire is smoke tested to ensure that it is working correctly and the vents can draw the required amount of air to ensure a clean efficient burning process.
Once everything is checked and documented, we clean the appliance as everyone notices a good-looking clean fireplace to give it that “I want one of those” looks. Care and attention in all we do.

It is not just about removing soot from the chimney during the winter though. At various times of the year we are faced with all sorts of problems that can occur in the chimney. Spring brings the nesting season and many a jackdaw has blocked a chimney with nest unbeknown to the owner who suddenly wonders why the smoke is coming back into the room.
Summer hopefully sees no need for the fire to be lit but those cool dark places can become an attraction for all sorts of flying insects that build their homes is fantastic woven nests that like a bird's nest, can become huge creations and block an entire chimney. Autumn brings leaves and twigs blown from neighboring trees so you can see why it is important to regularly have the chimney swept to ensure the smoke has a clear unobstructed exit up and out.
A blocked chimney not only stops the smoke from exiting but also increases the chances of carbon monoxide filtering into the room and causing serious risk to health and life. No one wants that to occur. That is why if we cannot easily identify a problem, we will use tethered cctv or video to explore the chimney and identify the problem. We will then attend to and remove the problem with the utmost care and attention. So, we can see it is not just a bit of dirt and muck to be taken away.
All Sweeps are more than happy to discuss how to set a fire to warm the chimney and assist the flow to be drawn upwards. They will also explain the reasoning behind burning certain wood is not a good idea and can cause unseen issues in your chimney that may lead to a chimney fire. If in doubt, always consult your local, friendly and helpful sweep as its their concern to look after their clients and keep the fires burning brightly.
